Guys SDN is inevitable evolution of networks however I would not be alarmed
as networks with SDN would most likely going to need network eng to design
build and operate.
SDN will at least as defined today will not replace routing protocols
(BGP/IGP) or transport technology such as MPLS, the SDN will be a more
evolved and standard based solution for scripting such as we use today EEM
or OP (juniper) in our router to identify events and react by either
alerting or by actually modifying configuration.

I do not think there is a medium or large and i will risk by saying even
small networks that do not use some kind of automation in their network.
SDN in standard form will allow central brain to observe and modify network
behavior in according to a policy pre defined by people!
so yes network eng will need to know more "software based" applications but
what is BGP or ISIS if not software!

So do not be afraid, embrace the evolution as it is already here and there
is a lot to be done.

I say that as long as people are inventing new things and it can anything
not only Networking issue, people will always have something to handle /
fix until it is beyond repair and they new things should be invented....

my 2.1 cents :-)
