multicast ping from a switch

Hi all

just wondering when you run a ping on a switch the source stipulated in the
ping syntax doesn't actually use the source vlan xx

sure i can use an extended ping but why when using ping 228.18.18.18 rep
100 source vlan10 pings are sourced from the transit address instead

hopefully an easy one....
