Configure failover on layer two interfaces Cisco 6500

Hey Expert,

Perhaps anyone have done this before,

Scenario as thus:
I have two redundant links in a DC environment and I'd like to optimize traffics using steelhead cluster. I am able to run HSRP fine on the CE devices facing the LAN but my problem is to monitor interfaces connecting to the 2 core switches from Steelhead1 and 2 at layer 2 respectively. How can I successfully monitor/failover in case interface between Steelhead1 and CoreSwitch1 (layer2) breaks? Whereas, CE1 is still actively passing traffic to Steelhead1. Please note, i am unable to run HSRP or VRRP between Steelhead Interceptor 1 and 2 hence, my need to monitor the layer two interfaces

Would appreciate any thought.
