Professional Experience
Verizon Business, Cary, NC 2006 - 2012
Sr. Network Archt Engineer MSNO
Managed team of implementation engineers. Design and show proof of concept for
enterprise customers. 10,000 plus node networks. My largest client Washington
Mutual, Designed and showed proof of concept for new super redundant and
secure network Use new Cisco Nexus and NAC. One month after starting this
position, I was promoted to the team leader. The networks I designed where
voice and data using all makes and models of hardware, from Cisco to
Riverstone. Using MPLS to replace old frame networks. I also designed and
built the infrastructure for DNS using BIND, TinyDNS, Infoblox DNS, and ported
version that used MySQL tables instead of zone files. For some clients, I was
required to build a custom solution to support load balanced services using
Cisco Directors, Ace Load balancers and other custom built solutions using
IPTables. The hardware used varied but 80% was Cisco gear from Cisco 1700's to
7206's for routers and Pix's (all models) and ASA 5510 and 5520's. Most
designs included multi ASA private and public. The MPLS clouds used
overlapping VRFs', IP space, and etc. Very complex designs to solve complex
problems. Also built complex Proxy solutions using Squid, Blue Coat, and
custom open source solutions.
Saitech LLC, Boca Raton, Florida 2004 - 2005
Sr. Network Archt.
Established a client base thru out the US and supported all IT needs ranging
from networking solutions (wireless and hardline), web based applications, and
product development. Designed and managed a WAN that connected cell towers to
a central NOC (Network operations Center) that was used to monitor day light
and night time running lights on towers to meet FCC requirements. Designed and
managed over 500 VPN networks that connected remote site thru out the US and
outlining countries using Jupiter (Netscreen), watch guard, Cisco ASA, Cisco
PIX, and other devices. These VPN networks carried all traffic back to our
headquarters to allow us to do content filtering, redundancy, and other
management functions from one central location. Also designed and built
solutions for large (10,000+ mail boxes) using Sendmail, Qmail, IronPort,
Postfix, and Efax solutions including virus and spam scanning systems tied to
spews and other black list services. Custom logging solutions using syslog,
Loglogic, kiwi, and a custom written solution I wrote in Perl with SNMP
support for monitoring Cisco and other gear. For monitoring I also built a
custom solution using the source code from BB4 (BigBrother) and added expect
scripts so that instead of just alerting you to a problem, say if Sendmail
stopped on one server, it would alert you but also execute a Sendmail expect
script I wrote that would ssh to the server and send Sendmail a HUP signal to
restart the service. It would then retest and send the results. My goal was to
design a system that would not just monitor but correct problems. I also used
Tripwire, Portsentry, and many other open source solutions for security and
monitoring including Site protector, Nessus, and Proventia.
Key Contributions:
Client SBA Network Services, Boca Raton, FL
B7 Instrumental in developing and implementing Business Continuity and
Disaster Recovery (BCP & DRP) Plans for corporate sites throughout the US and
outlining countries.
B7 Designed and implemented a new type of VPN network using wireless
modems mounted on wireless towers to connect all towers owed by SBA Network
Services to there headquarters. This allowed them to drop there old T1 and
Frame circuits saving them over 1.6 million per year. They owed over 14,000
towers. They then resold this solution to other carriers (Sprint, Verizon,
AT&T, and Cingular). This also in-turn allowed them to reduce there tower
building cost increasing sales by 200% there first year. Later I developed a
solution that allowed the wireless modems to call home and receive calls from
home instead of maintaining a constant connection that reduced the monthly
wireless modem usage cost by 500%.
Client - Nationwide Laboratories, Fort Lauderdale, FL
B7 Designed and built and fault tolerant network that allowed them to
bring all network management in-house. Allowing them to drop there monthly
network management service with Verizon.
B7 Using HSRP on 2 Cisco 7206 routers, I created and super redundant
network carried over a smart ring provided by Bell South. I registered an ASN
from Arin and peered them with Bell South and Verizon.
B7 Using 2 ASA 5520's (configured in active/active) I created a secure
network and VPN solution that allowed them to drop all there point-to-point
T1's to all there remote offices and connected these locations using broadband
access and Netscreen 5GTs. This allowed them to reduct there monthly
commitment to Verizon from 500,000 per year to less than 200,000 per year.
B7 Designed a monitoring solution that not only monitored all network
devices and servers, but in the event of a failure; it would execute and
predefined expect script that would try to correct the failure. For example:
if sendmail died on a mail server, it would execute and expect script that
would ssh to the sendmail server and try to send and killall -HUP signal to
the process effectively restarting that service. In the event of a router
failure, it would ssh to an IP addressable power strip and restart the device.
If the restart did not correct the issue it would then escalate the issue to
support staff.
