I work in a good sized HFT shop. Its a good job with good pay and long hours
(doing 10 to 12 hours a day myself and often weekend work). I would say you
have to absolutly LOVE networking to take on this type of a commitment.
Your designs and implementations HAVE TO work the first time. If not, the
traders are out of the market when they need to be in and that could
be financially devestating to the company, especially the smaller
shops. Think about the Knight Trading snaffu last year that cost them $400
million. It almost put them out of business had they not asked their
investors for another $400 million and they are pretty big in the equities
world. Work life balance is a challenge especially if you have kids but if
you love what you do then it is all worth it. At least thats my opinion.

Career advice - High Frequency Trading network engineer
Hi all,
Would like
some thoughts on HFT project network engineer role, the role is
for a
investment bank mainly to build new network infrastructure for the
organization. How is the role as compared to a investment bank campus
project
network engineer. Which role will give better experience and career
advancement, i have more then 5 years of enterprise network engineer
experience.
