You can't forget that the purpose of virtual link is to connect
discontiguous area directly to area 0. If authentication goes on the
virtual link than it would look more like

  area 0 authentication message-digest
  area 10 virtual-link 192.168.1.12 message-digest-key 1 md5 cisco

Also needed would be config under interfaces peering in area 0

intX/x
ip ospf message-digest-key 1 md5 cisco

I don't beleive the ' area 10 virtual-link 192.168.1.12 authentication
message-digest' is needed
