YES, You need both commands to have MD5 authentication.
This command "area 10 virtual-link 192.168.1.12 authentication
message-digest" enables MD5 authentication for area 10
This command " area 10 virtual-link 192.168.1.12 message-digest-key 1 md5
cisco" creates the virtual link with MD5 authentication enabled.
