IPV6 cef anf ipv6 multicast routing

Appreciate if some one could take few moments to explain:
Is it mandatory to enable ipv6 cef to run ipv6 multicast-routing on Cisco
non-distributed platform. I am running ipv6 multicast with and without
running ipv6 cef on ios platform and performance is same. So is there any
benifit of IPV6 cef.
