My two cents.

I think you should FORCE yourself to step away from the command line. BUT,
you should never really WANT to.

For most of us, in order to achieve the CCIE, we require an incredible
amount of passion for the particular discipline. So much so, that an hour
at the command line practicing is so much fun, it feels like just five
minutes. Damn, right now I would sleep with a Cisco ASA if it featured the
appropriate port.

As others in this thread have mentioned, stepping away from the devices
can be very important for the process for a variety of reasons, so
schedule it and enjoy. Just be sure the schedule you implement is well
thought through and adhered to.

Also of note is the variety of learning modalities one can take advantage
of. During the Thanksgiving break from my StormWind classes of ICND2 and
TSHOOT, I made sure to bring along some light reading for my time on the
beach. Sure enough, it was the Cisco Press ASA All-In-One text. Too bad my
wife caught me checking out the centerfold.
