You have to specify AD or it defaults to 5 for loop prevention. If the router receives the same summary from another router, it will use the local route with the lower AD.
Is it required to set it to something <90? No, it is not a requirement. You could set the AD higher so that the router will use a learned summary as opposed to using the discard route, for example. Dangerous, but certainly something that you can do.
