Brian,
although this John is considering some outside the envelope" semantics
(like server meaning an external server), I would not dismiss
"semantics" as a bad thing. They could, in the end, mean the difference.

Some exams may be worded to test your exposure to the technology tricks,
and some of us are not native speakers and miss some subtleties.

As with all things, a balance is required.
The root cause that I see here is those with a problem tend to write
about it focused on what they believe is important, as if all that read
can fill the picture :)
