For PPPoE, dialer-persistent does pretty much nothing.
Dialer-group is used for dial-on-demand configurations when you want certain type of traffic (that matches an ACL) to trigger dial-out action. To be quite honest, I'm not sure that's supported with PPPoE either, but I'll be corrected in 30 seconds if I'm wrong ;-)
