Hello Aaron,
I have the older model of Shunra, but I know they have developed their
reporting significantly, just as per flow statistics. You might want to
contact them directly to get updates on their reporting (worst case
scenario you could always use netflow for verify specific statistics). The
nice part is you could use Visio to create your emulated network, you can
be very specific which host/applications (src/dst) will be emulated with
which latency and which should be left alone. You can insert a wireshark
sniffer anywhere in the topology. It's nice to use a hardware solution
instead of a software, as it's independent of the system you might be
testing. Overall I would suggest buying the appliance, only if you plan on
using it regularly. If it's just a one time deal, it might not be worth the
cost, you could just use some of the freeware programs or contact them to
do the testing for you as a consulting engagement.

I know that OPNET an application performance module where you can sniff
couple of transactions (like Oracle translations) and play around with
attributes like latency, bandwidth, packet loss..etc to see what it will do
on the transaction overall time. That is more of a WAN simulation and not
emulation. The biggest problem with this that I had was sniffing each
transaction to represent the overall behavior of the application/database.
The more transactions you try to capture the better it will represent your
applicaiton, but that will take a lot more at as it's not easy to isolate a
transaction when you are dealing with multiple tiers such as
web/app/database.

Hope that helps a little bit, contact me offline if you have any more
questions.

Tom
