First of all. My number one suggestion would be to spend $500 and build a
quad-core system & run a Linux distro of choice. Make sure your motherboard
has a good number of PCI slots so that you can setup a hybrid lab (if you
ever decide to). You can very easily set this up in such a way that you can
connect to your box remotely and resume/pause labs without having to worry
about saving configs (nomachine/neatx is by far the best way to do this if
you want a GUI- think X11 over SSH tunnel) screen if you're just using pure
ssh. This way you don't have to worry about overheating your laptop, yet
you still have the flexibility of spinning up a topology within seconds!
Windows server is another option, but meh.. I can't really help you
there....
Dynamips tweaking: Make sure your idle-pc and idle-max values are set
correctly. This can drastically bring down the CPU utilization. But be
careful with idle-max. I've found that going to crazy with idlemax will
cause problems in complex topologies. LDP/OSPF/BGP adjacency flapping
etc....
