do you have some numbers to share about this ?
(eg: remote time.nist.gov vs local router synched to time.nist.gov)

Going to an outside NTP server over some network latency will impact
the time reference quality, and having a local intermediate reference
will, at least, be better for synch between local hosts, I would expect.

NTP does many things to compensate all this too. And in the end I guess
it depends on what do you need the time for. It might be your best bet
is a GPS receiver :)
