Hi Daniel
Have a go at this
Setup VLC
Video Server Setup.
1. Go to network settings and give your Video Server the IP address of
192.168.1.100/24
2. Locate VLC on your laptop and double click to open it.
3. On the tool bar, click on Media and then near the bottom of the menu
select "Streaming"
4. The first tab called file, under "you can select local files with
the following list and buttons" click the add button, here we will need to
browse for a media file, you ought to find a media file in my documents.
Once you have found the media file click on it and then click open, the file
ought to now be in the VLC
5. At the bottom of the open VLC screen click on stream.
6. On the new screen click on next
7. In the destinations field there is a drop down list called "New
Destination", drop the list down and select "RTP / MPEG Transport Stream"
8. Click "Add" next to the codec options, in the address field type the
multicast address of "224.1.1.1" and keep the base port as the default.
(Default is 5004, but it really does not matter what the port is)
9. On the same screen under "Transcoding options" there is a drop down
list called "Profile", drop this list down and select "Video - MPEG-2 + MPGA
(TS)"
10. Click Next and the options screen appear. Here check the boxes
named:
a. Stream all elementary streams
b. SAP announce
c. Fill in the dialogue box next to the SAP announce and call it
"VIDEO-STREAM-1"
d. In the Group Field enter the same of the Video clip, call it what
you like. "VIDEO-1"
e. Set the TTL to 10, (Although not required on a switched network it
will be required once we start streaming across a routed network.
11. Now click on the "Stream" button. Watch the timer on the bottom
right hand corner of the VLC player, if all the above was done correctly,
then the timer ought to be incrementing.
Note: The Audio has not been configured to be carried across, since it is
quite annoying. But if you really want to hear the audio then at step 8,
click you could have clicked on the icon of the spanner and screw driver,
gone to the audio tab and select the "Keep original Sound track"
Video Client
Go to the Video client:
1. Go to network settings and give your Video Client the IP address of
192.168.1.150/24
2. Open VLC player
3. On the tool bar click on "View", followed by clicking on "Playlist"
4. On the new screen, on the menu on the left hand side select the
arrow next to "Local Network", to expand the selection, click on "Network
Streams (SAP)". In here you ought to see the title of the video stream you
created in step 9c. It will take up to 2 mins for the SAP (Session
Announcement Protocol) to learn the available streams, so be patient.
5. Double Click on the name of the stream you want and the stream ought
to start playing, remember this is multicasting in real time so the stream
that you pick up will be from where ever point the video has reached on the
video server.
We do this all the time in the classroom
