Don't forget some Linux experience is a useful thing for your networking career:

Back on the NMS topic, a lot depends on what you're trying to do, e.g.
what types of systems you want to monitor, how you want to monitor
them, what information you want to collect, and how you want to
present it.

Splunk+Zabbix are pretty good for monitoring servers. Zabbix can be
more of a pain for monitoring SNMP-only kit, if you have to make up
your own templates.

HP has some pretty good stuff if you've got the $$. I'm hearing good
things about IMC.
