As for the USB adapter, Keyspan is certainly great, but you can find
other generic PC adapters for a third of the price or less, and
install the driver you downloaded from the chipset manufacturer's site
(usually FTDI Chip or Prolific which both have updated Mac OS X
drivers); I see some on eBay with a buy it now price of less than $3.
