Honestly, that hasn't been an issue for years, at least not for Debian or Red Hat derived distributions. yum and apt resolve dependancies and conflicts, almost always without user intervention, and the default kernels the distro ships works fine for nearly ever case issue. It's been a long time since I've had a problem with graphics. Sound is about the only place I'm unhappy with when it comes to Linux, the sound architecture is horrid, and pulseaudio makes me want to kick kittens.
