Think about the sorts of things that might need on a BRI. You're going
to need some sort of layer two protocol, so you have to ponder what
sorts of features might be required. Since BRI has been around long
before TCP/IP won the L3 protocol war, you have to have support for
multiple L3 protocols, like Novell IPX/SPX. Since this is a dialup
connection, you probably also want some way to authenticate the user
dialing in for security purposes.
PPP provides those things as well as error correction and compression,
so you can squeeze more data onto the wire. PPP also allows you to
create a multilink connection to bond multiple L2 interfaces.
It's a pretty cool protocol.
I'm not quite sure what you're asking in the second question.
