Sample Task: Configure SW3 interface fa0/4 in VLAN 3.

My Solution Config:
interface fa0/4
 switchport mode access
 switchport access vlan 3

Can the "extra" step of switchport mode access hurt me? No. Could it help me
gain points? Yes. Therefore, I go for it in the lab exam.

If the task assigned does not specifically say to put the switches ports in
'mode access' do you think it should be done as a best practice? Or do you
think Cisco would see that as a wrong answer?
