GroupStudy Mail Issues

I have been told by a number of people SPAM has made it on the list. I
would like to apologize for any inconvenience. The GroupStudy software is a
bunch of hacked software I wrote almost 12 years ago and definitely needs
some loving.

The current spam solution we have been using was installed in 2003. It is a
very easy solution. In a nutshell a first time poster to the list is sent a
confirmation e-mail. The poster must respond to the confirmation e-mail
before the list will accept the message. After the first confirmation, the
address is whitelisted. Using this method we block about 30K SPAM
messages/day on the list. An alternative would be to simply only allow
subscribed e-mails to post. But I found a number of people preferred to
post from accounts that were not subscribed.

I have spamassassin running on the server to filter my private e-mails. But
I found with the rate of messages arriving for the list, spamassassin had a
hard time keeping up and the list would end up dropping messages.

Recently a spammer started using my e-mail address to forward messages to
the list. Because I was one of the whitelisted addresses, the messages
proceeded through the list. I am now blocking messages from my primary
e-mail account to help prevent issues.

The good news is I am working on a major upgrade to GroupStudy. It will
take time, but I promise things will get better.
