If I were you, I'd buy a a couple of switches first, two 3560 and two 3550
(four 3560 if you could afford it). For routers you could use GNS3 and
connect them to the switches (you could find numerous write ups on the net
telling you how to do it). After considerable amount of practice, you could
rent an online lab...
