Ok..I've got some experience with the problem. I was a High Touch Engineer
at an SP. 6500's have a thing called chunk memory manager. The 6500
allocates memory in 64k byte chunks. Now if a process occupies a part of
that 64k, chunk memory manager once it completes it work it does not free
the entire block. That memory is stored in an area called dead memory. Which
is not actually dead and can be reused again. Now depending on what version
of code and the memory of the SUP card, when this condition occurs it can
effect SHOW RUN, AAA processes....etc. Normally, the way out of the problem
is to restart the box or flip over the SUP which I saw posted before. Lastly
you can upgrade the SUP's to RSP720 which I believe handles up to 2G of
memory. If you have large BGP tables with umpteen number of prefixes when
BGP scanner or event processor kicks in it can rail the CPU. Just my two
cents......
