There is a nice explanation in pages 220 - 226 in "Cisco Press MPLS
Fundamentals".

I guess that this would be a good candidate to lab up. From reading
the above pages it looks like the recommendation is to configure SOO
on the PE routers and the not backdoor CE routers.
