It'll be limited to two years. You will always move your expiration
date in two-year blocks starting from the day you passed the lab. You
must recertify no less than and no more than once per two-year block.
Example:
Passed lab Jan 1 2008 (hungover proctors are not all that helpful but
you somehow muddle through anyway). Certified through the end of
2009. Pass some CCIE written exam on Jan 2 2008. Boom - now
certified through the end of 2011. This was your one and only recert
for the two-year period that began when you passed the lab (yesterday,
in this example). Pass some written on Jan 1, 2009. Irrelevant.
Can't recertify again until at least Jan 1 2010. And you have until
at least Dec 31 2011 to do this - I've never been clear if you can
wait until 1 Jan 2012 or if you're considered suspended at the start
of the day vs. the end of it.
I sat the v4.0 beta even though I wasn't eligible to recertify just to
see if there were any big changes on the horizon (there weren't - it's
still the worst exam I've ever paid good money for). Fortunately, I
was only out $50USD and my time.
Cheers,
Scott
