This is my last comment, I agree with Marko and Paul, end of my part of
this discussion.

What is MSS for? What is windowing for? The whole goal of the network is
to provide the best performance of traffic thru it right?

The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) receive window size is the maximum
amount of received data, in bytes, that can be buffered at one time on the
receiving side of a connection. The sending host can send only that amount
of data before waiting for an acknowledgment and window update from the
receiving host. The first part of a TCP handshake is a 3 way connection
that will include the MSS in the SYN packet to let the sender and receiver
know the others MSS to help determine how they should calculate their window
scaling. Matching the receive window to even increments of the MSS
increases the percentage of full-sized TCP segments used during bulk data
transmission and thus helps minimize the number of segments sent when large
sets of data are transmitted.

The size of MSS determines the calculation of the number of packets that can
be received before acknowledgement in a given window. So the adjustment of
MSS in the SYN packet between two hosts helps to make sure that the window
scaling factor calculation between two hosts is providing the best
performance it can on a high speed network.

I didn't say ip tcp mss adjusts the MSS in a SYN packet during the three way
handshake as that is already inferred in the command. Helping with
calculating windowing is an end result of knowing the MSS.

It wasn't my intent to get into offline discussion, so I'm replying back
to GC. Sorry about that.

I'm not sure how "ip tcp-mss adjust" helps with TCP windowing. My
understanding that all it does is it sets MSS option in SYN packet to
specified value. Feature guide for this command hints on the reason for
it's introduction - PPPoE on DSL links and broken Path MTU Discovery due
to disabled ICMP on other side of TCP connection.
