I had a hard time working out that first email about the ICMP and PIM joins
I have to also confess :-)
My understanding:
If the ICMP is terminating on a router, then its simply Control Plane
traffic as far as that router is concerned.
If the ICMP traffic is only transit traffic and therefore not terminating on
the router in question, it simply Data Plane traffic.
Simple.
