Add the static route. As opposed to tge Cisco Lab environment where default routes will get you in trouble, in the real world they are needed.

One of the many things I have learnt working for huge ISP's and corporates is the K.I.S.S approach.

Sure some ISPs do things differently but at the end of the day you need to satisfy the customer

I take it from your scenario that the firewall acts as an Internet breakout box which means the default route needs to be pointed there. No mess, no fuss
