I have taken the lab twice. Once on Ver 3 and once on Version 4. Both I would say were much easier than some of the lab books I have used. The version 3 attempt I was not ready. Was trying to rush it before the change to Version 4. The second attempt I know that I just make some dumb mistakes and underestimated how much a certain technology would come into play.
Without breaking NDA, I will say this...If you do not read everything before you start configuring then you may run into trouble later. Layer 2 and 3 are the keys I believe. If you do not have 100% in these areas you will fail. They may ask for you to do something on Layer 2 and 3 and limit what methods you can use however they do not go to extreme methods either. They may say you cannot use command X, but as long as you know a second way of doing something whenever a command is taken away then you will be fine.
Things after layer 2 and 3 are pretty straight forward in my option. I do not remember being limited in what I could use, however they may ask for you to use some features beyond just the basic setup. So make sure you know at least where to look for other features either on the router or on the DOC CD.
The best way to judge the complexity in my option is to look at a Cisco Press Shortcut called CCIE Routing and Switching v4.0 Configuration Practice labs.
Also remember this...They give you a lot of tasks to do and you only have 6 hours to do them. If you can do any of the vendors labs within the 6 hour window and have time left to check your work then you will be fine. Also remember to read the global do's and do not's It is a separate window from the actual lab and if you skip reading them you may do something that is not allowed and lose a ton of points

Subject: Difficulty of CCIE R & S lab
Hi GS,
I wonder how difficult the actual CCIE lab compared to other
vendor workbooks, only if it is not violating the NDA.
Thanks & Regards,
