IMO you're better off with a $100 HP barcode scanner that you can program functions into. When you're scanning them off the boxes into excel, it's nice to have the scanner push the down arrow or hit enter for you after scanning it in. The speed and programming functions of a decent handheld will pay off quickly compared an iPhone app.
