The point of applying it toward what you do should be a motivating factor. I
chose SP when it was not popular but I was working with a lot of Major
Service providers at the time. The level of BGP was not there for R&S and
the switching theory was quite useless to me. I could have pursued R&S at
the time but it would not have helped me as much as the Service Provider
did.
