It is definitely personal preference but let me give you an example and then give it a try at home...
The lab moved to a single 22" or 24" wide screen monitor, which are wide but not very tall!
(9) Regular Size Putty Windows (And Group Policy forces the putty windows to stay on top so even if you click on a separate window, it will never be brought to the front so you have to move everything to get a clear picture of the window you are searching for!)
(1) Notepad Window
(1) Lets just say you drag and drop the images onto the desktop and open then in a single "preview" window or whatever they call that on a PC.
(1) Web Browser for your Doc CD thingy.
(1) Calculator Window
(1) Lab Exam Document Window
Now that gives us 14 Windows open at one time. Since there are so many windows open the little tabs at the bottom give you no information as they are so tiny by now and should you minimize anything you will take forever trying to find what you are looking for.
