Another view:
consider your switches to be boxes, its ports linked by strings.
The string is longer for slower links.
Lets call the best switch the root.
Now pick the root switch and hang it high. All others will hang from
some string, and will have some other switches hanging below.
Every switch (but the root) will be hanging from one port: this is
the root port.
For all the strings, they will have some switch higher than the rest.
That's the designated port.
Now go and let some kid play with the hanger mobile :)
