As you noticed, this is IOS version dependent command. In 12.2S (which
you need for CCIE SP), you cannot remove it. If you need to change RD,
you need to remove VRF and create it again. Furthermore, you need to
wait few minutes while VRF is being deleted. Major pain if it happens
in the lab.

With more recent IOS, you CAN change RD on the fly and it appears to work.
