This argument regardless of the position always seem to frustrate CCIE's and especially PhD's. Honestly, I cannot speak to the PhD side, since I have not pursued that. However I can say that I think the CCIE is very involved and a good process. I like the comparison of creating knowledge versus consuming knowledge. I really think the CCIE versus PhD is just different.
