I concur. The analogy I give that most people understand is speaking a foreign language. There are those that can speak it and those that are fluent in it.
I failed due to lack of time. Material was somewhat easy/straightforward but double-checking stuff and being unsure leaves you no time to get it all completed.

Interesting topic raised. CCIE requires discipline, requires that you have
a dedicated time everyday to study. I would say that 4h per day during the
week and 8hours doing mocklabs during the weekend, in a 6 months program, it
is possible based on the experience you described, but you should ONLY go
there, after you go through the whole BP and you have absolutely no doubts
in regards to it, also is pretty important to have an strategy to attack the
lab, people are failing for lack of time, you gotta be really but really
quick, without an strategy is almost impossible to pass.
