BGP questiom. Not lab related.

Question not directly related to lab, from a non bgp expert:

In BGP it is possible to prepend additional ASs. A router can prepend any AS
number, not only it's own AS number.
When I see an output of "sh ip bgp" and see "100 1 2 3 4 5 200", the only
thing I know for sure is that the route originated in AS200 and arrived from
AS100. ASs in between can be real or prepended. This works fine in the lab.
But in the real world, not knowing how far away the route originated and
what ASs it crossed, is it an issue ?
