The "latest" CCIE Written does a pretty good job of sticking to the more "core" protocols that we must work with for the lab.

For example - VTP, STP, RSTP, MSTP, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, EIGRPv6, OSPFv3

By far the biggest two areas of emphasis outside of "pure" Routing and Switching topics are Troubleshooting and Network Optimization. In Network Optimization I am referring to things like QoS, IP SLA, Netflow, etc.
