OT mixed switch types

Cisco Catalyst 3500 does not support 802.1w, rapid STP.
In an environment with two 6500 as the core switches, and a mix of 4500,
3750 and 3500's as the server farm and user switches, is it possible to
run 802.1w or 802.1s among those capable switches and 802.1d with the
3500's? If so, how?
