It depends on what you mean by "the gateway of last resort"!
What you saw is exactly what the "ip default-network" command in EIGRP
is supposed to do (different protocols, different versions of the code;
different behavior when it comes to dealing with 0.0.0.0's).
Please read through this carefully.

If you expect to get a 0.0.0.0 (quad zero) in your routing table then
you may need to configure a default route (for instance).
