Hi Jack,
Probably your best bet would be 3550 guys as they do support almost all layer
3 features. This platform, however, does not support PVLANs or new QoS
features. I'd imagine you can probably get 4x3550 boxes @ ~ $1000 (ebay
etc.).
Pros: They are your boxes and you can play with them whenever you wish, once
you're done you can sell the on ebay. You also can play with the hardware and
imaging stuff.
Cons: If you shell out $1000 to purchase 4x3550's, you can buy 400-500 hours
rack time with the same amount of money(everything's ready to go)...to me (and
busy people like me) it's almost 50 weekends; a year of IE preparation :)
You might wish to use the FN (see below) to see what features are
available/missing on different platforms:

Subject: 2960 or 3560 ?
Hello,
Can use a 2960 switch instead of 3560 for my CCIE rack ? What features will
not work ? I had 3560 but must return it back to work. 2960s are much
cheaper that 3560s on Ebay...
