Hi Jack,
If you wanted to jump to design /consultant, i strongly recommend you to
read CCDA and CCDP books. Also cisco pec has pretty good resources about it.
After that you have to read datasheets of the products like cisco device
datasheets.

First you have to read, understand the technlogy than you have to learn
which device you could you in which situation. That means you have to place
a device into a project which meets directly to what your customer needs.
Not much or not less.
