They are actually quite different. Where in a GSR can you put a
IDSM/FW/NAM/ACE/Any other services module? GSR is the older model of data
center routing and used IOS. Newer datacenter routers such as the CRS1 uses
IOS-XR and the Nexus7k uses NX-OS. In many Cisco DC slides you will still see
the use of 65xx switches for the "services" portion and Nexus7K core with
assorted distribution / access suggestions. In the past larger companies
(Fortune 500) and ASPs used GSRs to terminate circuits that allowed them to
peer with ISPS and at peering points such as PAIX, etc.
