CCIE Makai-

The most convenient option I found, was to create a loopback interface on the local computer, assign it an IP address, then associate that loopback interface with on or more of your router(s) interfaces.

I configured this recently with Windows 7, and it has saved me a bunch of time, as I am using some automation tools with the routers, that runs from my computer.

By using this method, I can use virtually any testing tool on the computer, or from a router to the computer. Very handy to have.

If using Windows, instructions for creating a loopback are here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839013

(Note, you may need to reboot, for the looback to "show up" correctly).

Run the "Network device list" batch file from Dynamips folder and gather the hardware reference for the new loopback adapter you just created.

Edit your .net file and add the following statement

F0/0 = NIO_gen_eth:DeviceNPF_{aaa}

Swap out Fa0/0 with an interface that is present on your router(s).
Swap out aaa with the value returned as part of the "Network device list" batch file.
Be sure to remove the "\" characters (as they are shown in the output of the bat file as well.)

On linux, it is even more simple, well documented and easily searched.

Best wishes,
