SNMP config for MRTG server

Good day

I need some help in creating MRTG server which can be accessible to Internet. But before I run an MRTG server I need to make sure that SNMP are running. What set of guidelines or commands that I need to run on my Catalyst 6506 about SNMP.

Any recommended books or reading materials to enlighten me?
