My current company does not use my ccie number, just have my cco with it. It
will not work in that case?

It's basically still a form of renting you number. If you aren't working
there full-time and they (Cisco) finds out, the partner will get "get well"
program, you could lose your number. Not really worth it IMO, unless your
friend wants to pay you full time.
