Hey Ed!
No, it is not a required command. By setting channel-group x mode
<active|passive|desriable|auto> you are also setting the
channel-protocol you are using. The channel-protocol command is just
a way to tell the interface "you can ONLY use PagP or LACP". I see it
as a protection against people that may not know the difference : )
In my opinion they shouldn't be touching your switches in the first
place, but what are you gonna do hehe
