I disagree with using dynamips for a CCNA. As Dale said, his friend is just
starting out so I think real gear is the way to go.

With real gear you get hands on. you can learn to update IOS, how to console
on to a router etc etc. things that are not covered in the CCNA exam but
valueable for being a capable network engineer.
