Jeff, I use a Q6600 quad core processor with 8 gigs of RAM and it's more
than enough - keep in mind you need to spend some time finding the right
dynamips router/IOS/idlepc combination. For instance, I never could get the
3750s to work satisfactorily so I switched to all 7200 routers. It seems
like that would take a lot more resources, but it actually runs more
smoothly - took me a long time to realize that though.
I also run vmware on the same server - occasionally I'll throw an acs server
or a couple XP boxes on the same network with my dynamips routers - it
allows me more flexibility with scenarios.
If you are looking at a dot1q card, I assume you are planning to integrate
your dynamips with 'real' 3560 switches. I have my box setup with about 20
different vlans that are carried over the trunk to a breakout switch - works
great for just about everything.
